Outbreak Watch: Hand Foot Mouth Disease in China

Case counts in China of Hand Foot Mouth Disease are spiking well above forecasted levels.  Monthly case counts in the most recent reporting period were more than four times higher than expected.  According to data collected by Ascel Bio’s Infectious Disease Forecast StationTM in China, May through July are peak periods for spread of the disease in China.  Nearly 400,000 HFMD were reported by Chinese public health authorities in the late April / early May reporting period.  HFMD is commonly caused by the coxsackievirus, spread typically by children still in their potty training years through touching soiled hands to their mouths.
