Laboratory Accident In South Korea: Pathogen Identified

The Korean CDC today has determined the source of the limited, previously “unknown” respiratory disease outbreak involving laboratory personnel at Konkuk University: Sacchearopolyspora rectivirgula (S.Rectivirgula).

We applaud Korean officials for their quick reporting of this matter and transparency in their investigative process.

Sacchearopolyspora is a well known cause of occupational exposures and triggers hypersensitivity pneumonia similar to that seen with Aspergillosis.
