Unusual Outbreak of Influenza Reported in Armenia

Armenia is reporting an atypical influenza outbreak due to A/H1N1 significant enough to prompt emergency meetings at their Ministry of Health.  This is in the context of expected seasonal influenza activity.

Armenia has elected to extend the school holiday to slow down spread. Hospitalizations have been noted, however significant infrastructure stress has not been noted.  No PICU admissions or pediatric fatalities were noted.

No healthcare worker infections have been reported, which suggests (however does not confirm) the A/H1N1 strain reported is likely covered in the current seasonal vaccine.  Armenia’s healthcare workers utilize influenza vaccination to the 90+% level.

IDIS Category: 3, likely routine pattern
